The
Trial - The inside story
The Trial is the inside story of Australia’s
biggest terrorism trial. An important film about human rights,
freedom of speech and how Australia deals with the threat of
terrorism.
Twelve men led by Abdul Nacer Benbrika
are accused of being members of a terrorist organization and
with providing resources to that organization. Two of the accused
face a possible sentence of thirty-five years in gaol and one
is accused of planning to be Australia’s first suicide bomber.
Directed by Joan Robinson and produced by John
Moore this observational film tells the story from
the point of view of defense lawyers working on the case.
The documentary takes the audience behind
the scenes of the Supreme Court of Victoria as barrister Greg
Barns and solicitor Robert Stary battle
to defend their clients. The trial was one of the longest running
criminal trials in Australian history. It ran for nine months,
involved 12 accused men, 25 lawyers and 482 secretly recorded
conversations.
The film also explores the impact of
the trial on the family of the youngest accused and how they
deal with the backlash from both the Australian and Islamic
communities.
The Trial was broadcast nationally
on SBS in February 2012.
